![]() As nephrologists, our physicians possess specialized knowledge and skill in the diagnosis and treatment of nephrolic (kidney) conditions and diseases. Nephrology is classified as an internal medicine subspecialty. Knowledge of internal medicine is required to obtain certification. Nephrologists may further specialize in pediatric nephrology or adult nephrology. Our medical staff includes the following physicians:
Jonathan Slater, M.D., F.A.C.P. Graduating Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of Connecticut, Dr. Jonathan Slater went on to complete a medical degree from that university's school of medicine in 1989. He served both his internship and medical residency at Danbury Hospital (Yale affiliate) in Danbury, Connecticut and completed a renal fellowship at the University of Colorado in Denver, Colorado. During his academic years, Dr. Slater was honored with induction into the honorary societies of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi and was the recipient of an American Chemical Society award. Returning in 1995 to western New England for the practice of medicine, Dr. Slater accepted additional responsibility as a clinical instructor for Tufts School of Medicine. He continues that affiliation in the capacity of assistant professor. He started Pioneer Valley Nephrology in 1998, where he administratively serves as the CEO. Dr. Slater is an expert in the management of hypertension and a principal investigator in a number of studies in chronic kidney disease and hypertension. Dr. Slater is very interested in advancing the field of nephrology and has published his research in numerous professional journals. He has also presented at professional assemblies including the Connecticut Chapter of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Slater is very active in the medical community maintaining an affiliation with the National Kidney Foundation and memberships in the Renal Physician Association, American Society of Nephrology, and the Massachusetts Medical Society. Dr. Slater is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians and is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He has a subspecialty certification in nephrology and specialty board in hypertension. He is licensed to practice medicine in Connecticut and Massachusetts.
Balaji Padmanaban, M.D., F.A.S.N. A native of India, Dr. Padmanaban graduated with a medical degree from Thanjavur Medical College in Thanjavur, India in 1991. He pursued general surgery training through Thanjavur Medical College. He received additional medical training in the United Kingdom where he served in separate yearlong senior house officer positions in Accident and Emergency medicine at Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley, West Midlands and at New Ham General Hospital in London. From 1995-2000, he continued his medical education with a three-year residency in Internal Medicine followed by a two-year fellowship in Nephrology and Hypertension at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Padmanaban joined Pioneer Valley Nephrology in August 2000. Dr. Padmanaban is very active in his medical field and maintains membership in numerous professional organizations including the Indian Medical Association, American Society of Nephrology, Renal Physicians Association, International Society of Nephrology, American Society of Interventional and Diagnostic Nephrology, Massachusetts Medical Society, and the American Medical Association. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and has a subspecialty certification in Nephrology. He is an associate member of the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine. Dr. Padmanaban has achieved designation as a Specialist in Clinical Hypertension by the American Society of Hypertension (ASH).
Dr. Krishnan Babu received his secondary and post-secondary education at the S.B.O.A. Higher Secondary School in Madras, India. He earned his medical degree (MBBS) from the Madras Medical College in 1992. He went on to complete a rotating internship through the medical college's affiliations in Madras. He then served as the Internal Medicine senior house officer at Kugans Hospital in Coimbatore, India before returning to Madras Medical College as the senior resident in Internal Medicine. Dr. Babu chose the Republic of Ireland for additional training in Internal Medicine, serving as senior house officer at Cherry Orchard Hospital in Dublin. In 1996, he relocated to the United States and served a three-year residency in internal medicine and a two-year fellowship at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, New York before joining Pioneer Valley Nephrology in 2001. Dr. Babu is interested in advancing the field of nephrology and continues his research with the support of a clinical research grant. He is active in numerous medical societies including the American Medical Association and the Indian Medical Association. He is registered with the Irish Medical Association and is an associate member of the American Society of Nephrology and the National Kidney Foundation. Dr. Babu is an associate member of the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine and is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is board certified in the subspecialty of nephrology and hypertension.
Dr. Fares graduated with a medical degree from the Universite Saint Joseph, Beirut Lebanon in 1994 and his B.S. degree in Mathematics and Physics from Lycee Francais, Lyon, France in 1987. He is a member of the American Medical Association, American Society of Nephrology, and the Massachusetts Medical Society. Dr. Fares has received honors and awards from the National Kidney Foundation Training Grant in Clinical Research, Diplomate of the American Board of Nephrology, and Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine. After completing his internal medicine residency at the University of Connecticut Health Center, Dr. Fares pursued a nephrology and hypertension fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Fares completed, subsequently, a nephrology research fellowship at Tufts University in Boston, also finishing a master in clinical research. Dr. Fares is licensed to practice in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
